Saturday 7th May 2016 was a very special date for the 21st Engineer Regiment based at Claro Barracks in Ripon, North Yorkshire as they celebrated the Sappers 300th Anniversary and we were asked to feed the throngs attending on the day. The event was special to me personally as my Dad was an ex-engineer who served at Claro Barracks in 21 Engineer Regiment.
The open celebration day was an opportunity for friends and families to all come together to eat drink and be merry, have some fun and see the fantastic displays the army put on.
Our pitch on the field allowed us to watch some of the goings on as well and we got the opportunity to meet with some old friends and make some great new ones as well.
The Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers played and the event was formerly opened by the Mayor of Ripon.
It was a great sunny day which was fab for the flypast of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of a Avro Lancaster, Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane. They were so loud but awe inspiring to watch.
There was a parachute display from the Silver Star Team, the Corps Hot Air Balloon and a riding display by the White Helmet Motorcycle Display Team which we had the privilege of feeding too.
There were Sapper veteran Chelsea pensioners, ex-sappers and serving military personnel chomping down on smoked ribs, charcoal chicken and juicy burgers and some just kept coming back for more.
We had the pleasure to serve over 300 personnel, friends and family which was perfect for the 300th anniversary.
